Kathy A. (Depina) Tavares

44, of New Bedford, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Tobey Hospital surrounded by her family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was the wife of Joseph Tavares Jr. Born in Wareham, the daughter of the late Daniel T. and Carlotta (Pina) DePina, she lived most of her life in Wareham and Fairhaven. She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and Kinyon-Campbell Business School in New Bedford. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fairhaven. Mrs. Tavares was a certified assistant nurse at Blaire House in New Bedford until her illness. Survivors include her widower; a son, Courtney DePina of New Bedford; two daughters, Terryn and Janelle Tavares, both of New Bedford; a stepson, Joseph Tavares III of New Bedford; a stepdaughter, Shaylene Barros of New Bedford; two brothers, Daniel DePina of Fairhaven and Manuel DePina of New Bedford; three sisters, Drusilla Perry of Mattapoisett, Jane DePina and Regina Gomes, both of Fairhaven; three grandsons, Courtney DePina Jr. of Wareham, Durell Gonsalves and John Spinner, both of New Bedford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven. Interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
