Updated Jul 21, 2018 at 4:46 PM FORT PIERCE, FL ¡ª Abbie (Maynard) Underwood, wife of G. Daniel Underwood passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 9, 2018 in Fort Pierce, Florida where she has resided since 2003. A native of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Abbie was the daughter of Janice B. Maynard the late Norman B. Maynard. Abbie loved spending time with her family, especially on the water. She is remembered for her kind spirit and her love of nature and animals. Abbie was a 1976 graduate of Fairhaven High School and graduated from Castleton College with an associate¡¯s degree in nursing and a BSN from the Medical University of South Carolina. Abbie enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in August of 1980. She served 3 years active duty and 3 years of reserve duty. She was stationed in Charleston, SC., where she met her future husband Dan in 1982, through the medical profession serving as a Paramedic and EMT. Abbie was an emergency department nurse at St. Luke¡¯s Hospital in New Bedford from 1989 through 2003, when she and Dan sailed down the Intracoastal Waterway in their 22-foot sailboat ¡°The Dove¡± to relocate to Ft. Pierce, Florida to commercially raise seahorses. In addition to her husband Dan, Abbie is survived by her daughters Ashley Underwood (Gregori ¡°Rocky¡± Gilliland) and Catherine Underwood, grandchildren Grayson and Abigale Gilliland, all of Ft. Pierce; mother Janice Maynard of Westport, MA; sisters Elizabeth Isherwood Moore (John) of Dartmouth, MA and Catherine Tveit (Arstein) of Fairhaven, MA; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a Celebration of Her Life on Saturday July 28 at 1 p.m. at the Seamen¡¯s Bethel in New Bedford, followed by military honors. In lieu of flowers, perform an act of kindness in Abbie¡¯s memory.


From Abbie¡¯s oldest sister Liz: ¡°She was diagnosed with non- small cell lung cancer on September 28. Her husband Dan did everything he could to save her. She passed away on March 9th after a good fight, but it was too much for her to handle.
