Mark Hession

Mark entered St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, in 1976, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and European History from the Seminary College in 1980, and completed the degrees of Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology, with a concentration in fundamental moral theology, at St. John's School of Theology in 1984. Mark's dissertation is a study of method in the writings of two classic American moralists, John C. Ford, S.J. and Gerald Kelly, S.J. Mark was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Fall River by then Bishop Daniel A. Cronin, S.T.D. on June 16, 1984. Mark's first assignment was to graduate studies in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America during the earliest days of the promulgation of the Codex Iuris Canonici. In 1986 he obtained his Licentiate in Canon Law while working with the respected director, Ladislas Orsy, S.J., S.T.D., J.C.D.; his dissertation is a study in the philosophy of law, especially the relationship of values to norms. Since returning to his local church, Mark has enjoyed a variety of assignments over the last twenty years involving both pastoral and diocesan leadership responsibilities. His assignments include work in curial offices, especially the Tribunal, as well as assisting in the formation program for the Permanent Diaconate. He directs the work of the Office of Priestly Life and Ministry in cooperation with priests representing the five deaneries of the diocese. Mark's principal assignment, however, is as pastor of Our Lady of Victory Church, a parish of more than three thousand households in the beautiful village of Centerville on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. There he collaborates with a parochial vicar, three permanent deacons, a professional lay staff and more than seven hundred volunteers to carry on the ministry of building a community of faith. He has first-hand experience and knowledge of the demands and challenges facing priests in the trenches in today's church. Mark has served NOCERCC over the last several years, first as an active member, then as a member of the Board of Directors, representing Region I. He served a term as Vice President and was elected President in 2001.
